These values are hard coded into kernel source code in some file, forgive me as I do not recall where I saw the code snippet. If you look at the post on comment 14 which is how sensors display the crit/hyst value for kernels beyond 4.18.x you notice the critical value is about 19x the temperature of the surface of the sun and the hyst value is absolute zero. Take note that this displays the proper critical and hysteresis values for my card. Here is my sensors bit from kernel 4.18.x - I have the R9-290. However - from the bit of research I've done trying to figure this problem out for myself I believe the following explains the overheating and burst of fan speed instead of proper cooling behavior. Maybe Mint can save me.I am not a kernel developer and haven't done much programming as of late, so I am not really in a position to actually test this hypothesis. I did successfully switch the radeon driver to amdgpu in Mint 20.3 by altering my grub files but don't know where to find the app because it doesn't show up in synaptic.Ĭan anybody direct me to a repository that contains this program? My card just gets way to hot to play any games now that my fans don't speed up. Unfortunately I can't get that app to work in openSUSE 15.3. I never did find a solution to the core and memory clocks problem or the fan speed problem with the radeon drivers but found out that with the amdgpu drivers I could get the fan speed control with a program called amdgpu-fan. Somebody made an app that did all that as long as you were using the amd proprietary drivers but it didn't work with radeon or amdgpu drivers. The problem was that I could not clock my card back down to amd reference because asus had upped it a bit and I no longer had fan speed control.

Fortunately the radeon driver was quite good by that time and I actually didn't really feel like I had lost any performance. It has been good to me but things got a tad more difficult when amd stopped supporting my Radeon hd7870.

I started on Linux with whatever openSUSE was called at version 10 back in 2006 and basically have used nothing else since.

Anyway I have a question for you all.įirst a little background to my situation. I think I've posted here before when I was checking out Mint once before but can't seem to recover my old password.
